Let’s Go to the Movies: March 1944

I’m trying something new this month. I want to find a few movies that were released between 1940 and 1945, and watch them in their corresponding 2021 month. Movies were a popular form of entertainment during the war, and our home front housewife would likely have gone to see the latest shows. If I can, I’m going to include contemporary reviews of each movie from periodicals she would have read, and I’ll tell you where you can watch them now.

Today I have three movies that were reviewed in the March 24, 1944 issue of The Family Circle. I’ve talked about this early version of Family Circle magazine before. You could grab it for free at your local Piggly Wiggly grocery store in it’s earliest days. If you scroll past the article, you’ll find more info on how to watch these films.

Watch them with me! Let me know your thoughts on them here or on instagram at @history.in.the.kitchen.

Enjoy the fun advertising to the left of the article on the first page, too!

You can find this one on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a free version to link. I believe it is free if you have an Amazon Prime Account, though: Up in Arms

You can find this one on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/ITHAPPENEDTOMORROW

I could only find this one on Apple TV. I’ll keep looking for another place to watch, but it is available on Apple TV.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you watch any of these. Do you have a favorite war-time movie?
