This ad is from January 1943. It is typical in it’s home front battle approach. Food companies often included tips and hints for home front housewives struggling to feed their families in new ways amid constantly shifting conditions.

My family has made this fruit salad since I was a little girl, perhaps even longer. Is this where they got the idea? We add sliced bananas to make a tasty side dish, but it works well as a dessert, too.

In the next two sections, the ad mentions buying a week’s worth of fruit cocktail to save tires and that fruit cocktail helps a family meet the government’s suggested intake of fruit.
