Christmas: Making a List in 1944

Our home front housewife might have needed a bit of help thinking up gift ideas. In the December 1944 issue of Woman’s Home Companion there was an article aimed at doing just that—helping find gifts for friends and loved ones with a variety of interests.

The different sections were made up of suggestions from individual magazine departments. The Fashion Department suggested accessories, the Interior Decoration Department offered ideas for the home, and the Good Looks editor talked about perfumes and toiletries. The Better Babies Bureau showcased the best toys to give, while the Home Service Center shared ideas for food gifts, complete with recipes.

I like that they included shaving tackle gifts for servicemen. I also love the toys. Many of these things are good ideas for gifts still today.

I’ll share the recipes from the food gift section at the end of the post. Cookies tomorrow! See you then.
