I don’t know about where you live, but this summer has been extra hot, extra early in the season here. I thought I would add two more cold drink recipes for you today, and I’ll link last year’s Drink Roundup for several other great options for cooling off, 1940s style.
These two recipes came from the June 23, 1944 issue of The Family Circle. This was when the magazine was still being distributed free to shoppers at Piggly Wiggly supermarkets. They were relatively short publications that had recipes and tips along with articles and short fiction.
Coffee Milk Shake

Results
This milk shake is quite a bit different than modern milkshakes. It’s more of an iced coffee flavored with molasses. If you don’t like the flavor of molasses, I’d skip this one. I think it smells lovely. I preferred mine without the added dash of nutmeg.

Mint Cocoa Cooler

Results
This was very refreshing on a hot summer day, and it was also very chocolatey. One of my testers said it was basically iced hot cocoa. That’s not a bad thing! Be light handed with the peppermint oil. Too much will ruin the flavor. Of the two drinks, I preferred this one.

Let me know if you try these or any of the others in the Drink Roundup.
