My mom used to tell me about the Come As You Are parties she attended as a girl in the 1950s and ‘60s. I was pleased to find an article with a housewife’s version in the October 1941 issue of “The American Home”. I have the entire article and some info on my blog. You can find the link in my bio.

Can you believe it’s October already? This month’s First Monday Menu is from the April 1941 issue of Better Homes and Gardens. I thought the ham and sweet potatoes would make a nice fall dish—plus the menu also includes peach cobbler. What better way to spend a cool fall evening than eating hot peach cobbler with a scoop of ice cream? You can find the ham recipe and my review of it over on my blog.

This 1941 Pear Cake recipe is fantastic! It had a biscuit-like bottom layer, sweet pear slices, and a brown sugar and cinnamon topping. Add the Dutch Hard Sauce and you’ve got a dessert you’ll make again and again. The only thing that might make it better is a scoop of vanilla ice cream! This recipe is from the 1941 Culinary Arts Institute’s “250 Delectable Desserts”.

Here is a day’s worth of menus from the September 1940 issue of Woman’s Day. The meals were planned for a family of four and the dinners were created to appeal to both parents and children. Lunch could be carried to work or school if needed. This Saturday set of meals were purposely made to be simple so the day could be left open for things other than cooking.
