My son moved into his college dorm this past week. It’s been a stressful–but exciting!!–couple of weeks! I’m so proud of him. In honor of his school colors, I’m sharing this Orange Bread recipe with you today.

In 1941, Woman’s Day magazine held a contest for teenage cooks. Virginia C. Weiner of Erie, Pennsylvania won $2 for her entry. The winners and their recipes were published in the August 1941 issue with profiles and pictures of some of the winners. I wish Virginia had been profiled. How fun it would have been to see what she looked like and learn more about her life in 1941!

My taste-testers had mixed opinions on this bread. If you like orange marmalade, I think you’ll like this loaf. The orange peel has a strong flavor that tends to a bit polarizing. Those of us who enjoyed it found that we liked it best served warm with some butter. I really think this could be served in place of a dinner roll with certain meat dishes. The recipe called for a day of storage before serving, so we made it one day and ate it the next.
Best of luck to all of you who have family members starting a new year of school this month!
